nervios

Provenance: Illustrative wording created by the editorial team; not participant testimony.

Signification donnée par le contributeur

Literally "nerves" — but nervios is much more than ordinary anxiety. It is a full-body state: shaking hands, tight stomach, racing heart, a feeling of something being about to break. In my family, nervios is what happens when the social or emotional pressure becomes unbearable — and it is real, physical, not imaginary.

Lien avec la santé mentale

Recognised as a culturally specific idiom of distress — nervios is not equivalent to "anxiety disorder" in Western psychiatry, though the two may overlap. It can include dissociation (ataques de nervios), physical symptoms, emotional outburst, grief, and social disruption.

Safe messaging for media

  • Use the expression in its stated context; do not present it as a diagnosis or universal translation.
  • Avoid describing a person by a stigmatizing term unless the person self-identifies that way and the wording is necessary.
  • For suicide-related coverage, avoid method detail, sensational headlines, and single-cause explanations; include help-seeking information.
  • Link to this entry’s evidence limits and distinguish contributor wording from analyst interpretation.

Contexte historique

Documented in Latin American communities for over a century. Ataque de nervios — a more acute episode — is recognised as a culture-bound syndrome in DSM-5 glossary, though community members experience it as real distress, not a category.

Contexte d'utilisation

Used commonly across Latin American communities. More accepted as a way to explain distress than psychiatric terms, which carry stigma. Older generations particularly use it to describe emotional overwhelm in somatic terms.

Ce qui reste incertain

Mental health professionals sometimes dismiss nervios as "just anxiety" or "functional". This misses the cultural and social dimensions — nervios is often tied to family conflict, migration, and structural stress.

"Anxiety" has some overlap, but nervios captures a communal, relational, embodied quality that anxiety disorder doesn't.
