পাগল

pagol

Provenance: Illustrative wording created by the editorial team; not participant testimony.

شراکت دار کا مطلب

Often translated as "mad" or "crazy" in English dictionaries, but পাগল carries a whole spectrum of meaning. It can be the person who talks to themselves on the street and is feared. It can also be the passionate artist, the person who loves too deeply, the one who refuses social convention. My grandmother called the neighbourhood saint পাগল with deep respect.

ذہنی صحت سے تعلق

Used both as a clinical descriptor (for serious mental illness) and as an affectionate or admiring term. This ambiguity is important. It means different people and communities can mean very different things when they say পাগল — sometimes stigma, sometimes freedom, sometimes genius.

Safe messaging for media

  • Use the expression in its stated context; do not present it as a diagnosis or universal translation.
  • Avoid describing a person by a stigmatizing term unless the person self-identifies that way and the wording is necessary.
  • For suicide-related coverage, avoid method detail, sensational headlines, and single-cause explanations; include help-seeking information.
  • Link to this entry’s evidence limits and distinguish contributor wording from analyst interpretation.

پس منظر

Sanskrit root: pagala, meaning one who is not bound by ordinary consciousness. The word predates psychiatric categories by centuries. In Baul and Sufi traditions, পাগল carries sacred connotations — the holy fool who sees truth beyond convention.

استعمال کا تناظر

Used across all contexts. পাগল হয়ে গেছে (has gone পাগল) can mean someone has lost their mind in crisis. পাগল না হলে এটা করা যায় না (you have to be পাগল to do this) can mean passionate or daring.

کیا غیر یقینی ہے

Does not map onto "mad" in English, "loco" in Spanish, or any psychiatric diagnosis. Different regions, generations, and social contexts give it very different weight.

مختلف تناظر سے نقطہ ہائے نظر

نقطہ ہائے نظر ساتھ ساتھ دکھائے جاتے ہیں۔ مماثلت کا مطلب برابری نہیں۔ کوئی ایک نقطہ نظر پوری ثقافت کی نمائندگی نہیں کرتا۔

Spanish · Latin America اس تناظر میں ملتا جلتا

Loco can work similarly — sometimes it stigmatises, sometimes it celebrates passion. But loco doesn't have the same spiritual lineage.

Arabic · Egypt اس تناظر میں ملتا جلتا

مجنون (majnoon) has a similar range — from clinically mad to the madly-in-love poet Majnun Layla. The sacred/mad duality is present.

English · USA اس تناظر میں مختلف

In English, "crazy" is being reclaimed by some mental health advocates but its primary use is still stigmatising. "Mad" in Mad Pride has a different, reclaimed political meaning.

French · West Africa اس تناظر میں مختلف

Fou carries mostly negative weight in formal French contexts; in some West African communities the boundary between spiritual states and mental illness is more fluid.
