A wooden boat crosses a wide Bangladeshi river at dawn in winter mist. Two boatmen stand at either end with bamboo poles; passengers sit between them. Rivers are a recurring presence in interviews about isolation, distance, and the difficulty of reaching care — "there is a river between us and the hospital" was a phrase used by more than one participant in different districts. A wide river in Bangladesh, photographed from a boat. The horizon is open; the water is calm; clouds are building on the right. Several participants used water imagery to describe internal states that they could not name directly — something vast, something that could shift, something with no visible edge. We do not know what this particular river was called when the researcher took this photograph. That feels right.

Three women work together painting a large mandala on a floor — traditional alpana or rangoli-style design in red, yellow, green, and white. Paint pots and brushes scattered around them. This was part of a community well-being session, not a research interview. It is included in this record because sessions like this — making things together, being absorbed in a collective form — were consistently described as helpful in ways that formal care had not been. A busy open-air market in Bangladesh. Pink and orange pottery, baskets, household goods laid out on the ground. Children clambering on bins. A woman in a bright floral sari stopping to look. Ordinary life going on — and within it, somewhere, the experiences this dictionary is trying to understand. Mental health distress does not pause for markets. It happens here too, usually unrecognised, usually unnamed, sometimes managed through exactly this kind of being-among-people.
